Alan Branscombe was born into a musical family in Cheshire on June 4th, 1936. He began to play drums at four, alto sax at twelve and did ENSA tours as a child. He played gigs on piano and alto sax as a schoolboy and left school at sixteen to work in various bands until he became an Army musician (1954 to 1956). After working with other provincial bands and on cruise ships he settled in London and joined Vic Ash's Sextet in summer 1958 playing piano, vibes, alto and tenor saxes. Leaving Vic Ash in the Autumn of 1959 he spent nine months in Tony Kinsey's Quartet and then joined Johnny Dankworth's band in 1960 playing piano and vibes. He spent nearly five years with Dankworth working occasionally with Tony Crombie and the Downbeat Big Band and the Harry South Big Band (1965). He was then a freelance playing on many recording and television sessions. He often worked at Ronnie Scott's Club and recorded with Stan Tracey and Tubby Hayes and played in Tubby's big band in 1969. In 1970 he toured Europe with Stan Getz. Further work followed in the Bobby Lamb - Ray Premru Big Band, Ian Hamer's Sextet, Stan Tracey and Tony Kinsey. |
Despite persistent ill-health and suffering injuries in a fall he continued to freelance through the 1970s and occasionally co-led a quintet with Jackie Sharpe. He died on October 27th, 1986 after spending much of his final year of life in hospital. Alan Branscombe's first name job was with the Vic Ash Sextet. Vic, in his biography I Blew it my Way said of Alan Branscombe: the band (Vic Ash Sextet) was a popular attraction at the London clubs and got praise from the musical press .... most praise was for Alan Branscombe, however. In spite of his habit of rarely practising he was always brilliant. He would sometimes not touch the vibes or saxophones for months, then come out and play them to perfection. Sadly Alan had succumbed to the hard drug scene to such an extent that he had run out of available veins in his arms and was forced to inject between his toes. He...died young and is greatly missed.... in the late nineteen fifties many jazz musicians got hooked because they saw drugs as an entree into the upper echelons of the modern jazz world... |
