| Jimmy recorded with the top bands of his time. On this page we have collected the details of his recording with Teddy Joyce, Percy Chandler and George Glover. There are separate web pages for his records with Joe Loss and Nat Gonella the two bands with whom he recorded the most... (Much of this information has been extracted from Brian Rust's excellent British dance band discographies...Information on record labels, original release details, and recording dates has been supplied by Leon Martel)... Some of the songs Jimmy recorded on his sessions with George Glover were issued on the 4 in 1 label (picture right). These contained two tunes per side and played for six minutes per side. |

In June 1931 Jimmy recorded three, (possibly more), titles with Percy Chandler and his band. The band had a very short recording life and appears to have had only three recording sessions to record about a dozen titles in the period April 1931 to June 1931. The first session in April had Al Bowlly listed as vocalist and another 'unknown' vocalist (?possibly JM). Without hearing the records it is impossible to know. Three titles were recorded then - all vocals by Al Bowlly. For the second session in May six titles were recorded, all vocals, but the vocalist name is not given, presumably some or maybe all of these could be JM. Their third and final session was in June, four titles were recorded and aural evidence suggest that three are almost certainly Jimmy. Detailed below are the second and third sessions where Jimmy is probably to be heard. It should be noted that nowhere in the discography does the name Jimmy Mesene appear, the aural evidence has been provided by Brian Jarratt... Instruments: tp: trumpet, tb: trombone, cl: clarinet, as: alto sax, ts: tenor sax, v: violin, p: piano, ac: accordian, g: guitar, b: bass, d: drums, voc: vocal. In the Autumn of 1933 Jimmy took part in three recording dates with George Glover and his band, recording eight vocals. Like Percy Chandler this band had a very short recording life and appears to have had only these three recording dates. In this period Jimmy was with Joe Loss and strangely recorded some of the same songs he was recording with Joe Loss. He also used the name Messini with George Glover, the same as with Joe Loss. Instruments: tp: trumpet, tb: trombone, cl: clarinet, as: alto sax, ts: tenor sax, v: violin, p: piano, ac: accordian, g: guitar, f: fl, b: bass, d: drums, voc: vocal. George Glover and his band - September 14th, 1933 Tony Thorpe, Bert Boatwright, Dick Boothroyd (tb), Frank Johnson (cl), EO Pogson (cl,as), George Glover (as, leader), Harry Karr (fl), Harry Balen, Jack Ambrose (v), Eddie Carroll (p), Dick Sadlier (g), Don Stutely (b), Nat Austin (d), Jimmy Messini (voc). Sentimental Gentleman From Georgia (vocal JM) / Remember My Forgotten Man (vocal JM) (Sterno 1265) George Glover and his band - October 19th, 1933 Personnel as August. Blue Moments (vocal JM) (Sterno 1290, Plaza P152, 4in1 no.72) It's The Talk Of The Town (vocal JM) (Sterno 1290, 4in1 no.70) Symphony Of The Breeze (vocal JM) (Sterno 1289, Plaza P167, 4in1 no.72) Yvonne (vocal JM) (Sterno 1289, Plaza P169, 4in1 no.72) All Plaza releases were shorter versions of the Sterno releases and were issued as by Art Willis & his Band. Plaza was an 8" rather than a 10" record. The 4in1 label, (picture above), was a 10" record with two tunes per side, different versions to those issued on Plaza... George Glover and his band - cNovember, 1933 Personnel as August. Headin' For A Weddin' (vocal JM) / Swingy Little Thingy (vocal JM) (Sterno 1300) |

Jimmy's recordings with Teddy Joyce and his Orchestra fit into the period between his departure from Joe Loss in mid 1934 and joining Nat Gonella in 1935. Teddy Joyce had a big band with, including himself, a four piece violin section. He also had four vocalists including Jack Plant, Eve Becke and Anne Howard as well as Jimmy. It is not always clear from the discography who the vocalist was and again for some titles we are reliant on Brian Jarratt. In the list below only Jimmy Mesene vocal titles have been listed. Those with a ? are not listed as by Jimmy in the discography, but Brian Jarratt is sure they are. Other titles recorded by Teddy Joyce in this period may include JM vocals but we have not heard all of these records and the discography is not specific. Instruments: tp: trumpet, tb: trombone, cl: clarinet, as: alto sax, ts: tenor sax, v: violin, p: piano, ac: accordian, g: guitar, f: fl, b: bass, d: drums, voc: vocal. Teddy Joyce and his Orchestra - August 3rd and 4th, 1934 Jimmy Macaffer, Arthur Niblo, Bill Smith (tp), George Ferrie, Alec Mitchell (tb), Stan Quiddington, Johnny Walker, Bennie Bronswick, Dave Roberts (reeds), Teddy Joyce (v,leader), Carl Tauber, Phil Sylvester, Harry Phillips (v), Bob Busby (ac), Jack Phillips (p), Harry Gray (b), Donald Whitelaw (d), Jimmy Messene (voc). It's All Forgotten Now (vocal JM?) (Sterno 1465) Love Thy Neighbour (vocal JM?) (Sterno 1465, Plaza 290 - issued as by Art Willis & his Band) Plaza releases were shorter versions, recorded on the same date, of the Sterno releases and were an 8" rather than a 10" record.... Teddy Joyce and his Orchestra - August 20th, 1934 Personnel as July 2nd. I Never Had A Chance (vocal JM?) / ?(Sterno 1483, Plaza 300 - issued as by Fred Southern's Band) Plaza releases were shorter versions, recorded on the same date, of the Sterno releases and were an 8" rather than a 10" record.... Teddy Joyce and his Orchestra - September 13th, 1934 Personnel as July 2nd. Isle Of Capri (vocal JM?) (Sterno 1492, Plaza P312 - issued as by Eddie Walters Dance Band) New Moon (vocal JM?) (Sterno 1492) Plaza releases were shorter versions, recorded on the same date, of the Sterno releases and were an 8" rather than a 10" record.... Teddy Joyce and his Orchestra - October 3rd, 1934 Personnel as July 2nd. Everything Has Changed But You (vocal JM) / Then I'll Be Tired Of You (HMV-B6534) Teddy Joyce and his Orchestra - December 11th, 1934 Personnel as July 2nd. Argentina (vocal JM) / I Couldn't Be Mean To You (HMV-B6567) Teddy Joyce continued to record regularly until mid 1935 but the discography does not name the vocalist so we cannot be sure that there are not further Jimmy Mesene vocals recorded. The band personnel listed from March 1935 includes Jimmy as a guitarist and vocalist, whereas for earlier dates he is listed just as a vocalist... |
