Graham Bond was born in Romford, Essex in October, 1937. He was a musical child and took up alto sax at the age of fifteen. He co-led the Terry Graham Trio (with drummer Terry Lovelock) and later gigged around London sometimes with John Burch, Dick Heckstall-Smith or Dick Morrissey. He joined Don Rendell in in May, 1961 and the Quintet recorded an LP in 1961. By 1962 he was with Alexis Korner's Blues Incorporated and this really set the tone of his future music as solid jazzy R&B. He was now playing piano, alto sax, organ and singing vocals. |
In 1963 he formed his own organ trio which became the Graham Bond Organisation and this existed until 1968 when he went to the USA. Returning to the UK in 1969 he formed a new group - Initiation. In the early 1970s he worked with Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce and Pete Brown before a period of illness kept him out of action. Bond was a larger than life character, with a somewhat erratic personality and he took his own life in May, 1974 under a London tube train at Finsbury Park station. A biography by Harry Shapiro, Graham Bond - The Mighty Shadow was published in 1992. |
