| Ronnie Ross discography... |
![]() |
Ronnie Ross was born in Calcutta, India in 1933. Both his parents were Scottish and returned to the UK when he was thirteen. He started on alto sax playing his first gigs in 1953 on tenor. He began working with Don Rendell in early 1954, playing tenor but soon switched to the baritone sax which he specialised in thereafter. He had a brief spell with Tony Crombie in 1955 and then, through the 1950s worked with Tony Kinsey and Don Rendell again and the big bands of Ted Heath, Tommy Watt and Johnny Keating before forming the Jazzmakers in 1958, a group he co-led with Allan Ganley. |
In 1959 he worked briefly in the US with Jimmy Deuchar and Ronnie Scott and toured the UK with Woody Herman's Anglo-American Herd.
The Jazzmakers disbanded in 1960 and a US tour with Vic Lewis followed before he formed a quintet with trumpeter Bert Courtley. In the early 1960s he worked with the Bill Le Sage Quartet (1961-65), Johnny Dankworth (1961-64) and the Clarke Boland big band (1965-66) as well as appearing at the Half Note club in New York with Jimmy Deuchar and Ronnie Scott in 1963. As jazz faded in the 1960s he did more and more commercial studio work appearing only occasionally on the jazz scene. He continued to work through the 1970s and 1980s with top musicians including Johnny Dankworth, Maynard Ferguson, Woody Herman and Stan Tracey in a variety of settings, as well as leading his own groups of varying size until his death from cancer in 1991. |
