Autumn 2009

GREETINGS FROM THE CHAIR

The Autumn Issue of the WU3A Magazine gives me the opportunity to address every member of the WU3A and since we are over 600 strong now, the need for change related to growth, continues.
We have dealt with the problem of an appropriate venue for our monthly general meetings and we now hope that some, short term solutions have been achieved. However should we continue to grow, we may need to address the problem again in the future.
With this in mind, our first General Meeting of the year 2009/10, on 2nd September 2009, will take the form of an open afternoon, at the Winmarleigh Rooms, Masonic Hall, Winmarleigh Street, at 2pm. There will be an open enrolment session, with tea/coffee and biscuits being served throughout the afternoon and renewing membership/ new membership will be the main reason for this meeting.
There will be no formalities or speaker, just the opportunity for existing and prospective members to meet up with Group Leaders and Executive Committee members, to enrol for the coming year and to socialise. In this way we should be able to accommodate the swelling numbers by spreading out over the whole of the ground floor of the building. All groups should have a representative there. It would help if the information about Groups was in printed form, which can then be handed out to enquirers.
This year has seen some changes in the Executive Committee members. We said a sad farewell to Ken Westgarth, Ex-Chair and long standing committee member and our Webmaster Frank Latham, who thankfully has agreed to continue to look after our web site. We thank them both for all their hard work and commitment and wish them well in their 'retirement'.
At the June AGM Angela Fauvel was elected onto the EC and Bill Jones has since become a co-opted committee member. Welcome to our new members and we hope that you will enjoy your term of office.
We are extremely lucky in Warrington as our U3A has good venues to meet, an excellent committee who work so hard to resolve every challenge that arises, great group leaders and a warm sociable membership, who enjoy their shared interests and each others company. This has never been more evident than at our Midsummer Bar B Q and Games day, on July 15th, which was enjoyed by 63 members. Thank you so much to all those who contributed to its success. Thanks to the weather for a glorious day, we enjoyed Boule, Petanque, and Croquet as well as various indoor games and quizzes. Thanks also to the staff of the Culcheth Sports Club and Village Catering, for their superb food and service. A truly wonderful day was had by all.
I hope you continue to enjoy all the variety and companionship that is the keystone of the WU3A for many years to come.
With my very best wishes to you all.
With my very best wishes to you all.
