Warrington U3A About Warrington England The Borough of Warrington is a Unitary Authority on the River Mersey on the northern border of the county of Cheshire in north-west England. Recently primarily industrial, specialising in metal products (particularly wire) and chemicals, it is now increasingly in the service sector. Warrington owed its location to the fact that it was the first fordable upstream point of the River Mersey. The town is today a communications hub lying on the main British west coast rail line and on two major junctions of the English motorway system, the M6 junction with M62 and the M6 junction with M56. It is a short distance by road from the Manchester and Liverpool international airports. During and after WW2, Warrington became known to many US servicemen stationed at Burtonwood, a large airbase now decommissioned, near the town. Pre-Roman settlement.
