What can you say about The Simpsons that hasn't already been said by someone far more articulate than myself. Like many others I believe that this show above many others is able to show us our faults and in a humorous way show us where we go wrong.
Truly there is a little Homer Simpson in each of us. We see traits in the characters that we see in others and ourselves. The neat thing is that they take things further, to an extreme before which we hopefully would halt.
Unlike other cartoons there is a very conscious effort made to make the situations real. Actions and consequences make the appropriate repercussions and they don't get away with walking on thin air. The jokey surreal elements of the comic art are in there but there is a firm foot in the reality camp.
The Simpsons show us our faults for us to laugh at from a safe distance and I like that. Futurama shows us where those faults may take us in the future,
Truly, Matt Groening has "a Butt that won't quit".
